Overview
About Brickwork & Retaining Walls
A retaining wall is doing a structural job, and when one fails it fails from behind rather than from the face. Ours are built off a concrete footing, with drainage and free-draining backfill behind them so water has somewhere to go instead of pushing on the brickwork through a wet winter. Where a garden falls away, terracing it with a wall or two turns unusable slope into level ground you can plant or pave.

The process
How the job runs
- 1
Work out what the wall is holding
How much ground is being retained, and how wet it gets, decides the footing and the drainage. This is the difference between a wall that stands and one that leans.
- 2
Dig and pour the footing
A trench is dug below the ground being retained and filled with concrete, so the wall is built off something solid rather than off topsoil.
- 3
Build the wall
Courses are laid to a line and a level, with any drainage outlets built in as we go rather than cut in afterwards.
- 4
Drain and backfill
Free-draining stone goes in behind the wall so water can reach the drainage instead of building up pressure against the brickwork.
- 5
Finish, cap and walk it with you
The wall is capped or coped, the joints are pointed and the ground either side is made good, then we walk the finished wall with you so you can see it is done properly.
The price
Brickwork & Retaining Walls costs
No two jobs price the same, and anyone quoting over the phone without seeing it is guessing. These are the things that actually move the number, and the visit to work them out is free.
- The height and length of the wall, and how much ground it retains
- Brick or block choice, and whether it has to match existing house brickwork
- How much excavation the footing needs, and what comes out of the trench
- Whether the wall carries steps or a coping
- Access for concrete and materials

Private homes only
We only work on private homes and gardens, so a domestic job is the job, not a gap between contracts.

The groundwork gets its time
The groundwork gets the time it needs. That is unglamorous, and it is the whole difference between a surface that lasts and one that moves.
- 3
Waste leaves with us
Waste leaves with us, so you are not left disposing of spoil, old slabs or brash.
- 4
One point of contact
